Being a good boss is more than just a job, it requires skill and constant learning. Chiefs, among other characteristics, supervise departments and the company as a whole, having an overview of the effective needs of each sector. Find out below if you have the necessary characteristics of a leader and if you are really prepared to exercise this position.
1 - Competence
The first and most important aspect to be considered in the qualification of a leader is his professional competence. The individual must know well the activities he will coordinate and also be able to do them. It is necessary to understand the responsibilities and tasks performed by each position in the company .
This occurs through professional experience, career progression and thorough study of the activities to be performed. Even if he has reached this position due to his competence, a boss does not stop working on his flaws and weaknesses, as he is in constant evolution.
2 – Vision
Bosses need to see the direction in which the company is heading and, through their actions, provide this institutional evolution . Thus, a good boss is one who follows the company's mission (doesn't your company have one? Well it should!), and works towards achieving it. In addition, he must anticipate problems before they occur.
3 – Teamwork
In addition to being able to trust their subordinates, bosses need to coordinate them and harmonize their activities within the team. Although hierarchy is inherent to the position held, a good leader is one who fosters loyalty and productivity. The responsibilities delegated to employees must be met through concrete actions, without the need for constant supervision and correction. Otherwise, the boss must scold them and make any substitutions .
4 – Leadership
Not all people are capable of leading. There are personalities more conducive to this activity. Usually, they are people with a motivating and executing instinct, who manage to capture the admiration of other people through their attitudes and, thus, delegate directives for the execution of tasks. Also, bosses must know when to take action, directly. It's not always necessary to delegate tasks, and good bosses know when to "get their hands dirty".
5 – Example
Good leaders also act by example. It's not enough to ask your employees to save energy and paper if you don't follow these guidelines yourself. An interesting example of a leader with this characteristic is Pope Francis, who dispenses with certain perks of office and has a frugal lifestyle. Thus, visit the “factory floor”, listen closely to the demands of employees and act in accordance with company guidelines.
6 - Initiative
Leaders must also be people of initiative. This means working from an idea to the point of implementation, not just suggesting concepts and hoping they will be adopted. At that moment, it is important that adversities are considered mere setbacks between the present and the effective completion of a given project.
Steve Jobs, for example, was responsible for creating personal computers. In the 1970s, when computers were still bigger than classrooms, he already intended to produce models that could be sold to private users, for home use.
7 – Resilience
Resilience means the ability to deal with problems and overcome obstacles. As a leader, you will need to exercise this skill consistently, even more so during market fluctuations. The labor market and the economic scenario are in constant transformation, which demands change, adaptation and aptitude to direct the company in this transition.
8 - Communication
Good bosses know how to communicate. This is a maxim that defines all business relationships, because communication can be internal (with employees and departments) and external (with customers and investors ). Communicative capacity is demonstrated through respectful interactions that do not underestimate the ability of their interlocutors.
In addition, it is essential that information is handled in a sensitive manner, that is, that industry secrets are kept, that employees' personal information is respected.
9 - Ability to deal with people
Whether they are your employees or customers, a boss needs to know how to deal with people. For this, it is not enough to know how to communicate. It is necessary to listen to suggestions, comments, perceive ineptness and motivate in times of difficulty. However, a leader also needs to know how to be direct and tough when necessary.
More than innate characteristics, these attributes can also be developed through professional experience and technical training. Even so, if you don't fit this profile, it is possible to fit into other professional types and reach different levels of success. What is important is the recognition that these skills require constant improvement and reflection.
